Wisdom Tooth Removal at Nova Smiles Dental

Wisdom tooth removal WallsendDr Jenny Hong (Dentist) provides comprehensive dental extractions and wisdom tooth removal in our family practice. Not only is this more convenient for your family, it also keeps the cost of your care as affordable as possible.

Wisdom teeth are some of the most common to be extracted, due to their location and susceptibility to complications. Because many individuals lack extra space for these molars to fully erupt, they can become

  • Impacted against adjacent teeth
  • Difficult to clean
  • Partially erupted
  • A source of swelling and pain
  • Host to gum disease

Protecting the Rest of Your Smile

Since wisdom teeth develop everyday complications and gum disease, many people wonder why it’s preferred to have them removed rather than treated. The answer is a simple one: because they have a tendency to become infected all over again or make the neighbouring teeth susceptible to unnecessary infection.

What to Expect During Surgery

A wisdom tooth removal surgery usually only lasts about an hour. Your appointment may seem much quicker if you’re electing to have sedation to help you relax. Even with an oral sedative or relative analgesic, Dr Jenny will numb the area around your teeth to ensure comfort at all times throughout your procedure.

Oral Surgery Aftercare Instructions

For the first day after wisdom tooth removal, take all medication as prescribed and drink plenty of fluids (just not through a straw). Alternate a cold compress on and off for 10 minutes for the first few hours. After a few days you can move from a soft diet to firmer foods as you feel comfortable.

Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water a few times per day and after eating to remove any food debris from your extraction sites. If sutures are necessary, they may be dissolvable or we will see you for a short follow-up appointment to have them removed.
